A CLINICAL healthcare apprentice has been nominated for an Ilkley business award.
Emma Garvey is in the running for Apprentice of the Year at the 2017 awards. The 23-year-old was one of 12 students to apply for the year long Clinical Healthcare apprenticeship pilot that took place across GP surgeries in Leeds and Bradford.
Emma, a student at Leeds City College, was based at Ilkley Moor Medical Practice, where she developed her skills and knowledge in helping nurses and doctors, alongside her theoretical studies at college. The course also consisted of modules commissioned by the NHS for the practical skills needed in surgery such as venepuncture and wound care. Emma has now been offered a full time job as a qualified Healthcare Assistant at the practice.
She said: "I’m honoured to have been nominated for Apprentice of the Year. The Clinical Healthcare Apprenticeship has allowed me to meet new people and provide an opportunity for me to progress in the medical industry.
"I have gained practical experience, confidence and qualifications to carry out procedures such as phlebotomy, ECGs and assisting in sterile environments. The best part of the apprenticeship was being able to work and earn money alongside gaining my qualifications. I have come a long way since I started and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in clinical healthcare and helping others."
Emma’s next steps are to develop further in the surgery, gain more training and eventually become a nurse.
Mark Evans, Manager of Ilkley Moor Practice, said: "Emma has become a key part of our Healthcare team and we are very proud of how well she has developed, it’s a credit to her and the Nursing and Healthcare team that have mentored and supported her.
"Ilkley Moor Medical Practice is fully supportive of apprenticeships in clinical and non-clinical areas; it’s an excellent opportunity for people who want to train on the job whilst gaining a qualification in their chosen subject. We are extremely pleased that Emma’s dedication and hard work have been recognised by the Ilkley Business Awards panel and we wish her the very best of luck in the finals."
