AN intrepid fan moved a step closer to completing a record-breaking fundraising football ground tour with a visit to Bradford City.

Ed Wood is aiming to watch matches at all 92 Premier and Football League grounds and English-based Scottish side Berwick Rangers in just 237 days to break the current world record.

He notched up his 83rd game on Saturday when he joined the crowd at Valley Parade for City’s 2-0 win over Chesterfield in League One.

During his visit, he even met Bantams boss Stuart McCall after having his picture taken by the Bradford City Memorial outside the ground.

He is taking part in the challenge in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, and has so far raised £4,957.

Mr Wood, of Pool-in-Wharfedale, started his fundraising football feat on August 13 last year at Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park.

Since then he has travelled an estimated 18,000 miles around the country, including to Yeovil Town and Hartlepool. This impressive figure will top 20,000 miles once he completes his challenge.

He set out on the challenge with a £10,000 budget, but due to complimentary match tickets and supporters’ kindness, he has only spent half of that figure so far.

Mr Wood is looking to reclaim the world record from Ken Farris, who set it during the 1994/95 season, after he had originally set it in 1992. He will continue his unique quest at an unconfirmed ground this Saturday.

His final, and 93rd stop, is scheduled to be a match at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux stadium early next month.

Posting on his online donation page, Mr Wood, who is a Derby County fan, said: “Match 83 was at Valley Parade and was the shortest drive from home. Bradford are on a good run and there was a big crowd for a third tier match.

“Seats were in the back/top of the main stand – giving us a good view of the town, as well as the match.

“As we stood for a picture by the Bradford City fire memorial, who should arrive but Stuart McCall.”

“I’ve already set the record before, so this time I wanted to add a little twist.

He added: “So far, I’ve learned a lot about prostate cancer.

“The statistics are quite staggering; one in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer.

“I’ve met some inspirational people who’ve been affected by this awful disease.”
