THE ENVIRONMENT Agency is to make regular checks on trees that overhang the River Wharfe at Otley.

The organisation confirmed the news as it gave out more details about the work it has recently carried out at Wharfemeadows Park.

A team from the River Stewardship Company, working for the Agency, removed a large fallen tree from a section of the river downstream from the weir last week.

The work was part of a wider flood prevention action plan as Martin Jones, from the Environment Agency, explained.

He said: "We are doing works like this across many rivers in Yorkshire as part of our plans to be ready for the winter season.

"These works include returning existing flood defences to their previous standard of protection, clearing culverts, removing debris and repairing damaged banks."

He added that trees which overhang the river in the park will now be included in the organisation's routine annual maintenance programme.

Will Kitts from the River Stewardship Company said: “Working in partnership with The Environment Agency, Leeds City Council and local tree surgery firm Northern Heights Tree Specialists enabled us to put together a dedicated team with the resources to tackle this technical job.

"The team were supported by local residents bringing tea, flapjacks and good will.

"We would like to thank all the stakeholders involved."
