AN AUDIO project which captures interviews with founding members, former staff and alumni from Leeds Trinity University, is on display at its campus in Horsforth.

Compiled by historians Dr Helen Kingstone and Dr Di Drummond, the oral history project celebrates the University’s 50 year history, since being established as two teacher training colleges in 1966.

Dr Kingstone said: "The project gathers memories from across the institution; capturing people’s thoughts from the past 50 years, and providing insight into the next 50 years.

"Meeting all the wonderful people involved with the institution has been an absolute privilege, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their experiences and their expanse knowledge of Leeds Trinity."

The team started by interviewing those there at the beginning before contacting other staff and alumni. Highlights include interviews with Dr Mary Hallaway, the first Principal of both unified colleges, Trinity and All Saints College (TASC), and with Sister Marie de Carmel, one of the last surviving nuns from the original staff.

More than 30 hours of interviews have been recorded, and then edited into a series of 80-second clips for a mobile exhibition, now on display at the university.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret A House said: "I’m exceptionally proud of the hard-work and effort gone in to compiling this oral history project, which provides a wonderful snapshot history of our institution over 50 years. I’m very grateful for all of my former colleagues who took the time to talk to our team, and hope they enjoyed reminiscing about Leeds Trinity, as much as we like hearing about it."

A special event to showcase Leeds Trinity’s oral history project takes place on Tuesday, December 6 from 10.30am to 12 noon. Local people are invited to join Dr Kingstone on a 45-minute walking tour of Leeds Trinity to view areas of the campus from the 1960s to the present day. Visitors will also be able to listen to the short audio clips in the exhibition.
