ACTION has been taken to deal with dangerous paving stones in Ilkley after a woman was seriously injured in a fall.

Bradford Council has tarmacked over the stones in the town centre after the issue was raised by the injured woman's daughter at a meeting of Ilkley Parish Council.

Jennifer Terry, 71, was taken to hospital with four broken ribs, a broken nose and broken teeth after stepping onto an unstable flagstone on a footpath behind The Grove.

After the accident her daughter Jane Steadman warned that numerous broken and damaged flagstones around the town could lead to fatal injuries for an elderly person.

Jane was invited to the council meeting by Cllr Mike Ridgway who described what had happened to Mrs Terry as appalling.

Attempts were made to identify the owner of the path on what was believed to be private land, at the back of shops on The Grove, to ensure the area was made safe. The public were also urged to report any unsafe pavements so that action could be taken to prevent any other incidents.

Cllr Ridgway said the parish council was pleased that Bradford had reacted to the problem by correcting the misaligned paving stones.

He added: "There are many potentially dangerous and unstable areas of uneven paving and kerb stones around the town."

He asked residents to report these to him via the town hall and added: "Since the publicity surrounding this very serious recently reported incident other residents have contacted me about similar occurrences that have resulted in damage to the individual."

Jane Steadman described how her mother, who lives in Ilkley, was seriously injured when she stepped on a flagstone and it moved by about an inch.

She said she had been told about a number of other dangerous flagstones since her mother's accident and she stressed she did not want the same thing to happen to anyone else.
