YOUNGSTERS at a Guiseley nursery have been have been enjoying fun that's out of this world as part of an international week-long event.

World Space Week was started by the United Nations in 1999 to celebrate the benefits and excitement of space exploration. This year’s theme is Remote sensing: Enabling our future which aims to highlight how we see Earth from space and how we can better the human race.

Staff and children at the Busy Bees nursery celebrated by making their own rockets from construction and collage materials. They have enjoyed making star constellation pictures and space themed playdough.

Children in the pre-school room enjoyed acting out the story Whatever next by children’s author Jill Murphy. Children were able to wear the colander helmet and sit in the cardboard box ready to venture into space. Youngsters also released balloons to see how far they would go.

Nursery manager Helen Burton said: "Space is a topic that really captures the children’s imagination with film characters like WALLE and Buzz Lightyear but the theme of National Space Week this year gives us the opportunity to educate the children about what the Earth looks like from space, where it sits within the solar system and helps to raise questions about how we can help keep our planet green and clean."
