NEW road markings have been introduced to improve sight lines for drivers at an accident blackspot in Ilkley.

After years of waiting, white lines on the entrance and exit to the former My Local supermarket site, Ilkley Bowling Club and The Lawns, have been completed on Bolton Bridge Road.

The road has been highlighted as an accident black spot for many years and both the residents of The Lawns complex and users of the Bowling Club and the retail store - currently closed for refurbishment before it becomes a Co-op - have complained about the restricted line of sight when using the location.

Chair of the directors of The Lawns, Elizabeth Huddleston, said she had been writing to senior engineers at Bradford Council for three years trying to get action.

After reading in the Gazette that Ilkley Parish Councillor Mike Ridgway had responsibility for parking and road safety she contacted him with her concerns. She was then invited to speak about the situation at a meeting of Ilkley Parish Council and as a result Bradford Council's principal engineer Simon D'Vali visited the site to see for himself the concerns of local road users.

Mrs Huddleston said: "I got in touch with Mike Ridgway and as a result of that someone came from Bradford and he was sympathetic to our concerns.

"He was here around 4pm when it was getting busy so he could see what it was like. He said he would not be able to get double yellow lines, but a single white line would be possible."

As the parish councillor with responsibility for parking and road safety Cllr Ridgway has had several meetings with Bradford Highways Department and at a meeting in the town on October 12 with the Principal Engineer from Bradford discussed this and other areas around the town needing attention that have been raised by residents.

He said: "A recent improved working relationship between the Parish Council and the Bradford Metropolitan District Council will now hopefully see the areas needing attention completed, together with a time plan in the near future."
