TWENTY Ilkley residents took part in a guided Bat Walk last Saturday evening (September 10) led by Andrew Milne, of the Friends of Ilkley Moor. The group, which included ten children, walked up to White Wells and then descended to the lower Tarn.

As dusk set in the group were able to see and hear a large number of Pipistrelle bats beginning their night-time feeding sessions. The group were able to use a ‘bat detector’ which allows human ears to hear the high-pitched sounds made by the bats to locate the midges and gnats which they eat in flight.

This was an exciting and new experience for the group who thoroughly enjoyed the walk, which was organised by the Friends of Ilkley Moor as part of their summer schedule of events on the moor.

Information about future events can be obtained from The Friends of Ilkley Moor Events and Learning Programme at The Information Office, Cafes and shops in the Town,or downloaded from the Friends website www.ilkleymoor.org
