ILKLEY-based Virtual College’s sponsorship of staff member Abby Dacres in the Dragon Boat Race has helped raise another £450 for the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

Forty-five teams from around the region came to compete in what became the largest community Dragon Boat Festival ever held in the UK as over 10,000 people flocked to Roberts Park in Saltaire to support the Bradford Lord Mayor's Appeal Dragon Boat Festival.

Dragon boats are 12 metres long, decorated with a traditional dragons head, tail and drum. Each boat had between ten and 16 paddlers providing the power, a drummer to beat a steady rhythm, and a helm to steer. The boats were raced against each other on the River Aire beside Roberts Park in a spectacular, energetic display.

Virtual College’s Abby Dacres said: "We didn’t win but our, all-female team of 18 did themselves proud. The races were exhausting but great fun.

“My thanks go to Virtual College and my other sponsors who have all now contributed to the Lord Mayor of Bradford's Appeal, with funds raised going to the Marie Curie Cancer Care and Make it Happen Appeal charities.”
