STUDENTS in Otley are celebrating 'excellent' GCSE results - with two achieving 11 A*s.

And 70 per cent of Prince Henry's Grammar School's students achieved at least five A* to C grades, including English and Maths.

The figures also show that 29 per cent obtained an A or A* in English and 30 per cent achieved an A or A* in Maths.

Half of all the students, meanwhile, achieved the English Baccalaureate.

The performance indicator measures the percentage of pupils who achieve five or more A* to C grades in core subjects including English, Maths, the Sciences, History and Geography, and Modern Foreign Languages.

Prince Henry's Headteacher Janet Sheriff said the school's performance was particularly impressive following a toughening of the standards in the Maths and English exams.

She said: "I am extremely proud of all of our Year 11 students - they have worked extremely hard to secure this success.

"Their effort and commitment, together with the expert teaching, guidance and support from our dedicated staff means that the vast majority have exceeded expectations.

"It is really pleasing when students achieve the grades they need to progress to the next stage of their learning."

She also singled out some "amazing" individual success stories, with a number of students securing A or A* grades in all of their subjects.

Sophie English, Jessica Hemsley and Iqra Shahid were amongst the highest performers, each achieving 12 GCSEs with 11 at A*. Emily Buttery, Eleri Haines and Jess Mustow, meanwhile, were all awarded 10A* grades.

And Theo Pedley, Timothy Frankland and Harry Forde each secured 12 GCSEs, nine of them at A* grade.

Otley-based MP Greg Mulholland has congratulated students across his Leeds North West constituency on their achievements.

He said: "Congratulations to all students receiving their GCSE results today, particularly at Lawnswood, Ralph Thoresby, Prince Henry’s and Lighthouse.

"Our schools do a fantastic job year in, year out, and parents and teachers have also worked hard to support everyone getting their results.

"Whether students are next going on to college, an apprenticeship or into work, I wish them all the very best in their future plans."
