DISPLAYS inspired by a local historian's book will be on show during a three-day flower festival in Leathley.

The Yorkshire Flower Club is holding the event to help St Oswald's Church celebrate its 1,000th year.

The festival will run at the church from August 27 to Bank Holiday Monday, August 29, with a 7pm to 8.30pm preview taking place on August 26.

The club has based its displays on information contained in The Book of the Washburn Valley: Yorkshire's Forgotten Dale, by Diana Parsons, after reading about it in the Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer.

Committee member, Gerry Sayers, said: "Our chairman had read about the book in the Observer and bought it, and we've picked certain aspects from it – about history and people of the dale – for our festival displays.

"So, there are pieces about the reservoirs, for example, and the schools."

The festival runs from 10am to 5pm each day and will link up with other events, including a 7pm concert at the church on the Saturday and teas on the Green on the Monday.

Proceeds will go to Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Epilepsy Action.
