HAWKSWORTH village held a garden party at Hawksworth C of E School on Sunday afternoon.

Villagers and their friends and families were able to enjoy a welcome drink of summer punch and then mingle in the grounds of the school, as well as look for The Queen quiz questions located in various places.

During this time judging was taking place in the school hall of the 'village show'. Categories included two family/house classes – miniature garden and a vegetable animal – while sections for individuals included a photo taken in Hawksworth, a flower arrangement in a tea cup, a jar of preserves, decorated buns, 'I grew this in Hawksworth' plus female and male craft classes.

There were two classes open to children in the village and any pupil who attends Hawksworth C of E – a birthday card for The Queen and a picture of Her Majesty.

Dorothy Pickergill, who organised the village show element of the day said: "Tables had been set up on the school playground for people to eat a celebration tea after viewing the exhibits in the show, however it started to rain just as final judging was taking place and the award cards were being written out, so this meant everyone ended up dashing into the hall carrying tables and chairs with them.

"The hall was rather crowded for the tea but everyone enjoyed the food, which had been planned and prepared by the small organising committee of Margaret Bairstow, Linda Summers, Alex Pownall and Shirley Tillotson."

Mrs Pickersgill presented the prizes to those Hawksworth C of E pupils who do not live in the village on Monday morning, just before doing her lunchtime supervising job at the school. The card class was won by seven-year-old Niamh Loftus, with six-year-old Zoe Pellant runner-up and seven-year-old Lewis Metcalfe, in third.

In the picture of The Queen class, first was Lola Bellamy Armstrong, second Bethany Hobson and third William Greenbank.
