AN OTLEY schoolboy has won a national 'young inventors' competition.

Thirteen year old Jack Gilmartin triumphed in the 11 to 13 age category of Your Life's Formula 100 contest - which challenged young people to 'invent the future'.

The Prince Henry's Grammar School student's proposal was for a high-tech Medical Bracelet that could link with paramedics' phones in an emergency.

Jack's concept was inspired by a family member who has diabetes, and would provide health professionals with a patient's medical history, including any allergies they may have.

His idea was one of just six, out of 140 entries, that was shortlisted - and won partially thanks to the public support the short online film he made about it attracted.

Your Life is dedicated to increasing the number of post-16 students who study Maths and Physics.

It says the competition - Lara Pieckza won the older class with her idea for a collapsible Aerochamber for asthma sufferers - was designed to inspire young people to find solutions to major problems.

The organisation's Patron, Beth Tweddle, said: "It is so encouraging to see young people’s ideas on how to invent the future and how unselfish their concerns are, often triggered by their own experiences within their own families.

"I am so pleased for Jack and Lara.

"I know from my own recovery from injury how important medical advances are and if this is what is motivating today’s teenagers, we are in good hands for the future.

"Studying Maths and Physics can provide the foundation to enable some of these brilliant creative ideas to become reality."

Jack and Lara have both won £1,000 for their schools and an iPad for themselves.
