ILKLEY Grammar School Year 7 students read their way through their recent Easter holiday.

And they weren't just reading for enjoyment... they were also reading for money.

The students were sponsored to read as many books as possible to raise funds for the charity Readathon.

About 3,000 schools take part in Readathon each year, with 750,000 pupils involved. Thirty major hospitals across the UK receive regular deliveries of brand new books from Readathon, reaching 100,000 hospitalised children each year.

The charity was set up in 1984 by Brough Girling, an English teacher and children's author, with his friend Roald Dahl as the chairman. Since Brough had his great idea, tens of millions of children have taken part and have raised more than £25 million to help seriously ill children.

Ilkley Grammar School raised £1,344.17 in this year's event.
