PEOPLE interested in finding out more about Jewish heritage in Ilkley are invited to take part in a walking tour of the town.

The event, entitled 'Jewish heritage in Ilkley – a mayor, a bridge builder, a foreign consul and the Kindertransport: Who were they and what were their links with the town?', will be led by Nigel Grizzard on February 28.

Walkers will meet at 11am outside the NatWest Bank at 19 The Grove in Ilkley. The walk will last approximately one-and-a-half hours and costs £5.

Mr Grizzard said: "We'll be walking through the town looking at sites of Jewish interest and hearing about those involved in the town.

"We've managed to unearth documents about the boys who came on the Kindertransport in 1939 from Vienna to Ilkley to start new lives in Britain.

"We'll visit the site where there used to be a synagogue, hear about Victor Edelstein and his life – his name is on the plaque on the bridge across the Wharfe – and hear about Charles Joseph Semon, the first Jewish Mayor of Bradford, who bequeathed to Ilkley the Semon home."
