A 'SPECTACULAR' garden fireworks show has split feeling in an Otley street – and got the police involved.

Some residents have congratulated Carlton Street resident Joe Scholey for the 15-minute display he put on from his back yard on November 7.

But for others the event raised safety concerns as they watched what they believe were mostly display grade fireworks – something Mr Scholey denies – released close to homes and cars.

Cambridge Estate householder Rosie Richmond, whose house stands opposite Mr Scholey's, has been leading the calls for action to ensure a similar event cannot happen again.

Working with other residents, she has raised the incident – during which she claims debris was "raining down" on vehicles and homes – as a cause for concern with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

She said: "This was opposite my house.

"One resident reported her roof showered with sparks, and another had debris raining down on his toddler's attic bedroom roof.

"It's been quite a battle to get our concerns taken seriously.

"We had the police out twice on the night, to no avail, and in the end had to advise other very upset residents to also complain via 101 to get the ball moving."

Mr Scholey, however, insists he has done nothing wrong, was using only normal-strength fireworks, and had no intention of upsetting anyone.

He said: "It was just a garden firework display for me and my friends, held before 10pm, and I had told the neighbours about it.

"Everyone seemed quite happy with it apart from one person, and I've had people thanking us for putting it on.

"I booked an appointment with the police to talk about what's been said and they've basically said we haven't done anything wrong.

"They did say that if I want to 'go big' I'd have to have it somewhere else, and I'll probably tone it down a bit next time."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We are aware of the concerns raised and are liaising with the fire service and the local authority.

"We have already spoken to all the parties involved and will continue to monitor the situation."
