SAVING Aireborough's Past will be the theme of an illustrated talk in Rawdon this month.

Old photographs and objects from the area will form part of the talk by Aireborough Historical Society archivist Carlo Harrison.

The event is being organised by Aireborough Civic Society, whose Chairman Clive Woods said: "The townships of Aireborough have an extremely interesting history. Unlike most areas we don't just have one, but three centres: Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon. And we have nine conservation areas - so we are very fortunate.

"Thanks to the introduction of photography in Victorian Times we now have a record of some of the people and places who lived here. Philemon Slater (1823 - 1878) wrote the 'History of the Ancient Parish of Guiseley'. His son, Ernest Ethelbert Slater lived in Yeadon at a house called Hopeville which I believe still exists. He was an enthusiastic photographer and the glass slides that he took of Yeadon and elsewhere are now in the Historical Society collection. They give a wonderful insight into Victorian Aireborough."

The talk, Saving Aireborough's Past: Old Photographs and Objects from Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon, will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 26 at Rawdon Community Library. Among the objects on display will be an early 1900's camera bought from a shop on Ivegate.

The event is open to anyone. Admission is free for Aireborough Civic Society Members and £2 for visitors.
