IT was full steam ahead when Embsay and Bolton Abbey railway volunteer Daniel Ferguson married Ruth Lutty.

They made history by becoming the first couple to marry at Bolton Abbey Station – on the railway where they met when they were both 19.

They were introduced by a mutual friend and, at the time, Daniel was working on a steam engine and was covered in oil and soot!

Despite that, romance blossomed and the couple enjoyed their first "proper" date at the railway.

And, after getting engaged last year, they decided they wanted to marry there.

They started investigate whether Bolton Abbey station could be licensed to hold weddings, and this was granted just before Christmas.

So, on September 18, Daniel and Ruth became the very first bride and groom to walk down the 'aisle' in the station's booking hall.

Since the building was licensed, there has been a great interest in the railway as a wedding venue, and four couples have already booked their ceremonies.

Stephen Walker, the railway's business manager said: “We were delighted to host Dan and Ruth’s wedding – both of them are part of the railway ‘family’ and I am sure many other couples would wish to do the same. The interest has been amazing.

"As a new venue, I am sure we can cater for couples wishing individuality rather than the corporate style of many of the more established venues."
