THE DEPUTY Mayor for London met up with his niece and nephew from Ilkley when he paid a visit to Bradford Grammar School on Friday (September 18).

Deputy Mayor Roger Evans, spoke to the Junior School at Bradford Grammar, had a guided tour and found out more about what the pupils are up to.

He began his visit by talking to the186 junior pupils, ranging from six to 11 years, where he spoke about life in London, his job as Deputy Mayor, and the importance of key issues in his role.

These included cutting crime, protecting and promoting the interests of outer London, keeping costs of Greater London Authority to a minimum and supporting the freedom of drivers whilst improving the tube and bus network.

The pupils were also given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the talk - including Roger’s niece and nephew, Isabel Bishop, 6, and Joe Bishop, 9, both from Ilkley.

Headmaster for the Junior School, Neil Gabriel said: “It was a huge pleasure to welcome Roger to Bradford Grammar School. The pupils were excited to meet him and they learnt so much more about the election process with particular emphasis on how he was elected as Deputy Mayor.

“This is fantastic learning for the pupils. It also ties in very nicely with their work from last year where they held their very own election with three different parties. Learning about British culture and spiritual, moral and social development is of utmost importance for our pupils and meeting the Deputy Mayor has really brought this learning to life. Roger will always be very welcome at the school.”
