POLICE have this week issued an urgent reminder to residents to lock unattended doors and windows after a rise in the number of burglaries in Ilkley during June.

As the weather heats up, thieves have been taking advantage of those who have failed to employ basic home security measures.

Last months saw a rise in the number of burglaries, most of which have taken place overnight. And in 40 per cent of cases, entry was gained through unlocked windows or doors.

Inspector Sue Sanderson, who leads the Keighley Area Neighbourhood Team, said: "We have seen an increase in burglary in the Ilkley area during June, compared to the same period last year.

"Most of these offences have occurred overnight, but perhaps more significantly, about 40 per cent have been where entry has been gained through unlocked doors and windows.

"This type of crime tends to rise during the summer months as people spend more time outdoors, so I would advise residents to keep doors and windows locked.

"This also applies to when you are at home, as a thief can be in and out in seconds."

A concerned Ilkley resident contacted the Gazette to also urge fellow residents to remain vigilant.

"We know of a number of people who have been targeted in the past week," he said. "I know people have been careless with their locking up and with windows as the weather gets warmer, clearly leaving them vulnerable."

But Insp Sanderson added: "I would like to reassure residents police are working hard to tackle this slight rise in burglary, and a local 36-year-old man and 37-year old woman were recently arrested and questioned about burglaries in the town.

"A 19-year-old Keighley man has also been charged with a number of burglaries at Burley-in-Wharfedale.

"I would ask people to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity to the police, using the 101 non-emergency number.

"I would also ask them to view the West Yorkshire Police website at westyorkshire.police.uk, which has lots of useful tips to help you improve the security of your home and your outbuildings."
