AN MP who campaigns for tougher sentences for criminals has been appointed to Parliament’s Justice Committee.

Shipley MP Philip Davies will now sit on the powerful Justice Select Committee scrutinising the work of the Ministry of Justice and other bodies.

He said: “I am delighted my colleagues elected me to serve on this committee. I am very passionate about tackling crime and ensuring victims get the justice they deserve. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure criminals are serving their sentences in full, receiving the correct sentence and action is taken to stop the criminal justice system from losing public confidence. People want criminals to be punished not let off with a slap on the wrist.”

Mr Davies will step down from the Commons Culture, Media and Sports Committee which he has served on since 2006 to take up his new role.
