A COUPLE who run a charity for disabled people in Nepal have issued an urgent appeal to help the victims of the devastating earthquakes.

Jane Schofield Gurung and her husband Prem, who is Nepalese, are asking for donations to help the injured rebuild their lives.

The Gurungs, from Burley-in-Wharfedale, are organising a series of fund-raising events. The couple, who visit Nepal regularly, run the Western Nepal Disability Trust which support local projects.

After the latest earthquake Jane revealed how one project had saved the life of a wheelchair-bound man. The man who has a spinal cord injury was able to escape from his home when disaster struck thanks to a ramp which had previously been installed.

Jane said: "Thousands of people have suffered life changing injuries. In Nepal even under ordinary circumstances, health care is difficult to access, and can be too expensive for many. After the earthquake, in the short and long term, many people need medical care and treatment."

She added: "Our appeal will support organisations who we have previously worked with, to provide medical care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and equipment: for example artificial limbs, splints and wheelchairs. We will also help to provide opportunities for training and loans to start income generating schemes, or for housing.

"We are asking for donations (Gift Aided if possible) to help injured and disabled people, and their families, to rebuild their lives."

One of the couple's daughter, Sophie has already raised more than £300, with help from friends including Harriet Day, with a bun sale at Ilkley Grammar School.

Jane said: "After the shock of hearing of the earthquakes, priority has been to make contact with family, and we are thankful that they are unharmed, but we are mindful of the loss of many others."

A charity curry evening will be held at the Moghul Restaurant, Burley-in-Wharfedale on May 27. Bookings should be made on 01943 864403.

A coffee morning will take place at the Parish Centre, from 9.30am to 11.30am on Saturday, June 13, and a fairtrade craft stall will be held at Ben Rhydding Community Fete from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, June 20.
