AN Ilkley butcher is among seven to be chosen to compete for the title of Premier Young Butcher 2015 this summer.

Joe Smith, who works for Lishman’s of Ilkley, has been shortlisted by the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders to compete for the honour. He’ll join fellow Yorkshireman Matthew Lewis, of Blacker Hall Farm Shop in Wakefield.

Both Lishman’s and Blacker Hall Farm are members of the Q Guild – an elite group of award-winning butchers.

Joe, who turns 22 this month, is no stranger to success having won the Dalziel Young Butcher Competition in Leeds last year. He said: “I’m in it to win – I’m really keen to give it my best.”

The final of the competition will be held at MeatUp in Stoneleigh on June 30. Yorkshire butcher, Leeds City College student George Clapham, of Far Barsey Farm Shop near Halifax, will also be competing for the title, won in 2014 by Chris Riley, of Walter Smith’s in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
