SPORT, science and a snake were among the activities laid on at Ilkley Grammar School's annual open day.

The school show parents and prospective students a whole host of curriculum activities, while its science department wowed visitors with experiments galore last Thursday (October 2).

During the morning, Year 8 student guides took parents around the school and in the evening the displays in classrooms ranged from the scientific and fiery to the dramatic, musical and creative.

There was public speaking, experiments, an International Café, snakes, Squatopoly, photography, dinner time symmetry, textiles, cook offs for the National Rotary Club Young Chef Competition, Raspberry Pi demonstrations and a variety of sports on display!.

Ilkley Grammar School students showed off their scientific knowledge, handling snakes, dissecting hearts, explaining what it feels like to be in a vacuum, chemical pyrotechnics and the favourite hair raising ability of a Van de Graf generator.

The young visitors were enthralled to see just how exciting studying science at Ilkley Grammar School can be.

Headteacher, Helen Williams, said: "It’s wonderful to see the interest that the Open Day generates in all subjects across the school. The displays were fantastic and the enjoyment experienced by both current and potential students was obvious."

Assistant Headteacher, Chris Washington, declared the day a great success, adding: "Record numbers of parents came and were overwhelmingly impressed by the calm and positive learning environment and the knowledge and maturity of the student guides. The school really did look at its best and we are looking forward to welcoming another cohort of Year 7 students in September 2015."
