Crowds brave weather to cheer on Yeadon Carnival

Ilkley Gazette: Crowds lined the streets, despite the unseasonal cold and damp, to cheer on the 2014 Yeadon Carnival parade. Crowds lined the streets, despite the unseasonal cold and damp, to cheer on the 2014 Yeadon Carnival parade.

The organisers of Yeadon Carnival have paid tribute to local residents for braving unseasonally cold weather to turn out and support the event.

The 2014 carnival was held a week earlier than usual, on Saturday, June 28, to avoid clashing with the opening day of the Tour de France.

People turned out in good numbers, despite the low temperatures, to line the streets and cheer on the bicycle-themed parade as it made its way to Yeadon Town Hall.

And the gala at Yeadon Tarn Field Park, featuring live music, dancing and gymnastic displays, and a variety of stalls and games was also well supported.

Carnival committee chairman Tim Wood said: "Despite being held early and the weather being more like November than June, the people of Yeadon showed their true colours and resilience to make sure the day was a good one.

"We had an amazing parade with an impressive turnout from local schools in fancy dress, an exciting motorcycle cavalcade, beautiful vintage cars, a fire engine, and a police escort - all led by Yeadon's Carnival Queen and her assistants, resplendent in frocks and flowers.

"We would like to thank all those who helped and made this year's event possible, including Leeds City Council, the volunteers and marshals, the police, Leeds Bradford Airport, Multiflight, NatWest, Jackson Superbikes, B&TS, Flowers by Jane, Morrisons supermarkets, and lots, lots more - not forgetting all those who braved the weather to come.
