THE 70th Anniversary of D Day was marked in Guiseley with the placing of a Normandy Veterans Associations wreath at the town's memorial garden.

The wreath was placed by Elsie Turner fromThe Royal British Legion Guiseley branch. Also attending was the area's MP Stuart Andrew, ward councillors, and representatives from local groups who had been to a WW1 projects meeting for Aireborough.

This week Mrs Turner thanked everyone in Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon, who had helped to raise £31,433 for the 2013 Poppy Appeal.

She said: "Volunteer collectors stood in Morrisons Guiseley and Yeadon every day for two weeks also two Saturdays at Asda store in Guiseley Retail park.

"The Army Cadet Unit (Yeadon). Collected at Guiseley Football Club and Morrisons. 2168 Air Training Corps (Yeadon) collected at Morrisons,and the squadron band also took part in the Remembrance Day parade. Schools, shops, public houses, and business premises had collecting boxes for two weeks,

"Without all these helpers working as a team we could not achieve this wonderful amount. Your help and support are very much appreciated."

The Royal British Legion will hold a wreath laying service in memory of the centenary anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, at Guiseley memorial garden,Town Gate,on Monday August 4 at 11am, and will also place crosses on war graves in St.Oswalds churchyard. Guiseley brass band will be playing from 10.30 am.
