Hand-crafted miniature yellow jerseys helped an Ilkley business get ahead in this year’s annual Ilkley Carnival shop-window competition.

Duttons for Buttons, in Church Street, has been presented with its award for winning the contest, with its colourful Tour de France-themed window display.

The shop, which has been in Ilkley for 34 years, was one of 13 entrants in the competition this year.

A team of four hand-knitted more than 40 miniature jumpers as part of the display, which also included a full-sized bike wrapped entirely in red, white and blue ribbon.

It was unanimously declared the winning window by members of Ilkley Carnival committee, who highly rated its originality of design, creative materials and use of space.

Duttons for Buttons will now receive one month of free public- relations support, worth £850, from the competition sponsors, Ilkley-based Approach PR. Suzanne Johns, managing director of Approach PR, the team behind Ilkley Carnival’s media and social-media campaigns, presented Duttons for Buttons with their Shop Window Competition award this week.

She said: “Ilkley Carnival 2014 has given us all an insight into just how much good this local event can do for our community and the shop window competition is an essential part of the carnival build-up.”
