A woman recovering from a debilitating spinal stroke has so far raised £2,000 for a hospital ward after completing a mile-long swim.

Addingham’s Fiona Mann completed her 64-pool lengths swim last week, raising money to buy equipment for Ward Five at Airedale General Hospital.

Although she has already raised £2,000 – and Ilkley Rotary Club has offered to buy a much-needed bath chair for Ward Five – she is continuing to welcome donations for the hospital.

Mrs Mann suffered the spinal stroke last summer, which left her paralysed from the waist down. She has been slowly recovering and wanted to do something for the hospital ward which treated her.

She said: “It was a real challenge but I was determined to do it, even if it took me all afternoon.

“So many people have been fantastically generous that I really want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me, particularly those whom I have not been able to thank personally.”

Mrs Mann thanked her husband Andrew, sister Steph, and close friends Caroline Knight and Hayley Bryden for supporting her on the day.

She plans to leave her JustGiving donations page open for three months, to allow more people to donate to the cause.
