A loving great-grandson is completing a skydive in May to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
Tom Featherstone, who lives in Otley and works in the town’s Sainsbury’s, will throw himself out of a plane to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of his “inspirational” great-grandma Jean Lee, who was born and raised in Otley and lived in Weston Lane until she had to be moved into a care home due to dementia.
The charity tandem skydive will take place on Sunday, May 18, in Bridlington and Tom will be jumping from 10,000 feet.
Tom said: “I’m doing this to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, which is a charity very close to my heart. My great-grandma Jean had dementia and it eventually led to her being put into a care home.
“As a family we watched her slow deterioration and she eventually succumbed to the disease in August 2012.
“The disease is horrific and unrelenting, but my great-grandma, even though she had no idea what was wrong with her, always kept smiling. You could tell she knew she was poorly, and her devastation at being put into a home nearly destroyed us.
“She was an inspirational lady and I miss her terribly, and I hope raising money for this fantastic charity will help towards better and faster diagnosis, treatment and ultimately a cure for this horrible condition which affects not just the sufferer but all of the loved ones around them.”
