Strong winds, gusting at up to 70mph, caused chaos in many parts of the district last week.

The worst weather came between about 4pm and 10pm on Wednesday, with trains and flights cancelled, trees uprooted, roads closed, power lines falling down and debris flying around.

Trains between Leeds and Ilkley were cancelled for a couple of hours due to strong winds affecting overhead lines. Rail services were also suspended at Bradford’s Forster Square due to overhead line damage.

In Guiseley, a tree was blown down and fell onto the roof of a house.

In Apperley Bridge, a motorist had a lucky escape when a power line came down and landed on a car. The incident happened on Apperley Lane, near the Stansfield Arms pub, at 5.50pm.

The road was closed in both directions and diversions were put in place for motorists.

A police spokesman said the power line was not sparking but was in the road. Northern Powergrid were called to the scene to isolate the power.

Several flights to and from Leeds Bradford International Airport were cancelled, diverted or delayed, and train services badly affected, with none running at all to Ilkley for much of the evening.

A road near the airport was closed because of a fallen tree. Dean Lane was shut between Whitehouse Lane and Otley Old Road. A tree was said to have fallen on a bridge.

Road commuters from Wharfedale also encountered problems after one of the main routes into Leeds, the A660 Headingley Lane in Headingley, was closed in both directions due to a fallen tree between the Richmond Road junction and the Hyde Park traffic lights.
