Crime in Ilkley fell last month after an increase in burglaries caused concern for residents in December.

Wharfedale Neighbourhood Policing Team this week reported there was just one house burglary in the town in January, which saw jewellery stolen, and a failed attempt to break into another house.

There were eight house burglaries in Ilkley the previous month, leading residents to fear burglars were targeting the town.

A total of 19 crimes were recorded by police in January, compared to 25 for the same period last year.

Among these were two thefts from motor vehicles, a single report of criminal damage, and three assaults – one of which was dealt with by a community resolution.

Police said a man from Leeds was recently jailed for six-and-a-half years for burglaries in Ilkley, Leeds, York and other locations.
