A Yeadon woman has celebrated her 100th birthday with her favourite fish and chips.

Mary Aivison, a loyal customer of The Wetherby Whaler, chose the Guiseley restaurant to host her 100th birthday party, where she was joined by her nieces and nephews.

Mary regularly visits the restaurant with her family and decided it was the perfect way to mark her milestone birthday. As well as fish and chips, the party enjoyed birthday cake and reminiscing with a collage of pictures of Mary throughout her lifetime.

Born in Yeadon, Mary worked at Ben Brown’s greengrocers in Yeadon high street and was a dinner lady at Yeadon Westfield Junior School. Formerly a fan of the original Harry Ramsdens, Mary is now a huge supporter of The Wetherby Whaler, a Yorkshire-based fish and chip restaurant chain that stepped in to save the iconic fish and chip restaurant in Guiseley.

Mary said: “I love Wetherby Whaler fish and chips, so I thought it was the best way to celebrate my special day.

“The staff went the extra mile to make sure that I really enjoyed my birthday and the food was fantastic as usual – maybe a regular portion of fish and chips is the secret of my longevity and good living!”
