Pupils at Westville House School in Ilkley took part in a road safety competition last term in the hope of persuading motorists to slow down near schools in the town.

The school is on Carter’s Lane, Middleton, which has a speed limit of 60mph and is unlit. The school has now written to the local authority in the hope of getting all schools in the area, as well as Westville House, to have lower speed limits outside their premises.

The three winners of the road safety competition – Cerys Ali, Poppy Ibbetson and Fergus Brown – have had their posters made into road signs which are now displayed in the car park and school grounds.

Westville House headteacher, Rosey James, said: “I am delighted the whole school community – pupils, parents and staff – are working together to make the drop off and pick up times safer.

“We have been in correspondence with local councillors and are hoping that lower speed limits will be considered outside all schools in the Ilkley area.”
