Details have finally been confirmed about which parts of Otley and Yeadon will have their street lights switched off for part of the night.

Leeds City Council’s city-wide cost cutting scheme, which sees lights in certain ‘non-risk’ areas turned off between midnight and 5.30am, was introduced to sections of Adel & Wharfedale this week.

Now the authority has announced which parts of the Otley & Yeadon ward will be affected when the switch-off begins there on Monday.

As expected, the change will only affect main traffic routes including:

  • Otley bypass and a small part of Bradford Road
  • A section of the A660 Leeds Road between Old Pool Bank and Otley
  • A stretch of the A658 Harrogate Road between Leeds-Bradford Airport and the Dyneley Arms crossroads.

Councillor Ryk Downes, who has been pressing the council to release details, said: “I finally managed to get them to release the list of lights they’re partially switching off at night.

“I am relieved that there are none in residential areas and we’ll have to see how this affects travel but the switch-off is on main roads where it has been deemed safe.”

In total 105 street lights in the ward will be turned off after midnight from Monday.

As previously reported, the Aireborough & Wharfedale Neighbourhood Policing Team believes the change will not have any affect on community safety.

The council hopes the overall scheme will save £1.3 million over the next ten years.
