Councillors are calling for assurances for residents after the shock announcement that a Yeadon care home is to close.

Ryk Downes, Colin Campbell and Sandy Lay say they have concerns for people living at Haworth Court after an announcement that the home would be demolished within a year.

The news came out of the blue for residents when they were told about the plan at a meeting last week.

“We are concerned about the effect this may have, in particular as this is the second time this has happened to some residents,” said Coun Downes. “Haworth Court is their home and its loss will be difficult for them.”

Coun Lay said: “We are also concerned that residents of Suffolk Court, which is next door, were given an assurance they could stay in the home as long as they needed until they found suitable alternative accommodation. This has not been offered to Haworth Court residents, who have been told that the building will close and be demolished within a year. “With the closure of three council homes in the area, suitable alternative accommodation is now at a premium and we are seeking an assurance that no one will be forced to move away.”

Coun Campbell added: “We appreciate that Haworth Court does not meet current standards and would have supported any scheme which refurbished the properties while allowing existing residents to remain. The demolition proposals mean that elderly residents face a period of uncertainty and upheaval which is not something I welcome.”

Earlier this year elderly people who faced losing their homes were told they could stay. Residents of two care homes in Yeadon and Horsforth faced uncertainty as Leeds City Council looked at changes.

The planned reorganisation suggested the closure of Manorfield House, Horsforth, and the conversion of Suffolk Court, Yeadon, to an intermediate care centre.

But after consultation the council released an amended plan that said all residents will be able to stay in the homes, which would take no new admissions.
