Gritters on the roads in Wharfedale this weekend will not be a sign of imminent Arctic conditions.
Bradford Council Highways staff are getting prepared to tackle wintry weather with a gritting “dry run” on road across the district The weather forecast may show it to be mild and damp at the weekend but on Saturday Bradford’s fleet of 26 gritters will take to the roads.
The exercise will help drivers familiarise themselves with the routes and make sure that there are no obstacles which are not shown on their maps.
By gritting a short section of road each they will also ensure that their equipment, including global positioning system indicators, are up to scratch and ready for action.
Bradford Council’s stocks of grit currently stand at around 30,000 tonnes. Each winter the council treats around 750 miles of major and minor roads.
