Otley’s town council leader and a mayor from South Korea visited the US base at Menwith Hill this week as part of an ongoing international protest.
Mayor Kang has been travelling around Europe to spread the word about the destruction of part of his Jeju Island to make way for a US Naval base.
He was joined by Councillor John Eveleigh (Lab, Ashfield) and Andrew and La Young Jackson, who have stayed on the island, when they gathered outside Menwith Hill.
The Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) had asked if a representative from the ‘listening station’ could come and meet the visitors, but in the event that did not happen.
CAAB co-ordinator Lindis Percy said: “The link between the island of Jeju and NSA Menwith Hill is that both bases are an important part of the US Missile Defence system.”
Coun Eveleigh added: “Mayor Kang is an incredible character who has faced several periods in the cells for standing up to the development of the US Naval base on Jeju Island.”
