Call for Ilkley parking issues to be tackled
Councillors are to debate the issue of parking in the Denton Road area of Ilkley following a complaint of disruption to residents when local events take place.
A resident told Ilkley Parish Council last week about parking problems for residents when the Ilkley Triathlon last month coincided with events at the nearby cricket club, Ilkley Rugby Club, and a football match on West Holmes Field.
Footballers who regularly visit the fields are said to have been struggling to find places to park, and vehicles associated with the triathlon were parked along the residential section of the road.
“It’s was ridiculous. It was busy by nine, it was packed by ten,” said the resident.
He suggested something similar to the seasonal parking restrictions on the section of Denton Road between Middleton Avenue and the suspension bridge needed to be done elsewhere on the road.
“I think somewhere along the line this council needs to put much more pressure on Bradford to look into it seriously, because I don’t think they take Ilkley seriously.”
There are concerns about what will happen when the Grand Depart of the Tour de France comes to Ilkley next summer.
Parish Council chairman, Councillor Mike Gibbons, who is also a Bradford district councillor, said: “We love events to happen here in the town, it’s great to see these facilities being used but there are residents who take no part in these things, who simply want to go out and to be able to come back home and live their lives without disruption.
“We do need to be mindful of these people when we’re doing this. I think it’s important when the various organisations are putting on events they should be talking to each other and trying to marshall these things as effectively as possible.”
Sue Gledhill, of Bradford Council Keighley Area Co-ordinator’s office, said there was a system of planning for major events, and questioned whether officers had been informed so many activities were taking place in the area at the same time. The meeting also heard concerns about obstructive parking on Grove Road and by Morrisons on Bolton Bridge Road.
