Council hopes to get people fitter with free gym sessions in Otley and Guiseley

Free swim and gym sessions are being held in Guiseley and Otley to help residents get fit.
The sessions are part of the council run Leeds Let’s Get Active scheme, which aims to get people living healthier lifestyles.
The initiative started last month and will run for an initial 18 months.
Otley and Yeadon councillor Ryk Downes, said: “The cost of gym membership can put a lot of people off getting fit, so I’m really pleased the council is offering free gym and swim sessions at Aireborough Leisure Centre and free swimming at Chippindale Pool.
“Most of us could do with leading more active lives, so I’d urge residents to take advantage of the free sessions over the next 18 months.”
The city-wide pilot will see one off-peak hour each day made available at every Leeds City Council-managed leisure centre. The sessions will be open to all but will be primarily targeted at those not currently involved in sport or physical exercise.
The scheme is being paid for through a total of £1million match-funding by Leeds public health and Sport England through the National Lottery, plus an additional £60,000 from Leeds City Council’s health budget.
Community sport sessions will also be held in parks, and GPs will be able to refer patients for cut price leisure centre membership.
Physical inactivity is estimated by Sport England to cost Leeds £10.4m every year. Aireborough Leisure Centre will offer free gym sessions, from 1pm to 2pm, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Free swimming will be available from 1pm to 2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, as well as from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday.
Free swimming sessions will take place at Chippindale Pool every day at the following times: Monday 7pm to 8pm; Tuesday 12.45pm to 1.30pm; Wednesday 8.15pm to 9pm; Thursday 7pm to 8pm; Friday 12.30pm to 1.15pm; Saturday 7.45am to 8.45am; Sunday 3pm – 4pm.
