Horsforth Farmers’ market to celebrate first year
4:04pm Thursday 3rd October 2013 in Local news
Horsforth Farmers’ market will be celebrating its first anniversary in October with a cake and live music.
The success of the market, which was launched during the Hope in Horsforth fortnight run by local churches, will be celebrated on Saturday.
Duncan Stow, market manager and a member of the organising group said: “We are thrilled with how the first year has gone. We believe our Farma-certified market offers a very positive shopping experience, with some 20 stalls selling a variety of excellent locally-sourced food covering almost everything from apples to venison.
“There is a great community atmosphere and always a buzz of people chatting and catching up with each other. The market has definitely become a meeting point for the community. We try to encourage this friendly atmosphere by having entertainment such as live music or children’s activities.
“We’ve had a bouncy castle a few times which always proves a big hit for parents shopping with young children who need to burn off energy.”
The market aims to encourage people to think about where their food comes from. It also helps community projects by providing a stall giving groups the chance to promote their work.
Market proceeds have recently been used to give £250 to St Margaret’s Primary School’s chosen charity working with vulnerable communities in Matugga in Uganda.
Duncan added: “The school have been very supportive of the market which takes place in their car park and supporting a charity which they are connected with seemed an appropriate way of saying thank you.”
The first anniversary will be marked with the cutting of a cake at 11am along with live entertainment from Horsforth Music Centre. The market runs from 9am to 12.30pm on the first Saturday of each month excluding January at the top of Town Street.
