Fat cats are wanted for Guiseley vet's diet competition

Podgy pets will be put through their paces in a competition organised by a Guiseley vets.
White Cross Vets has launched a competition to find the most overweight cat and dog in the area – so they can get to grips with slimming them down.
The company is running the competition in response to a surge of overweight cats and dogs coming into the practice and to raise awareness tackling weight problems. It will put the animals through their paces as part of an extensive weight-loss programme and offer them the chance to win a year’s supply of healthy food.
Pet owners have until the end of September to enter and the most deserving cat and dog in the area will each win two months worth of Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution. The competition is also running across White Cross Vets’ 11 other practices and the pet that loses the largest percentage of their body weight nationally will win a year’s supply of the food up to £500. Craig Harrison, of White Cross Vets, says: “The dangers of cats and dogs being overweight are often overlooked, despite the problem being one of the main welfare issues affecting pets in the UK. Pets face many of the same risks as overweight humans with diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and the consequent lower life expectancies becoming genuine concerns in overweight cats and dogs.
“We’ve seen year on year increases in the number of obese pets coming into our practices and it’s not unusual to see them weighing double what they should. As a result we’ve recently launched free weight clinics for cats and dogs which have proved hugely popular. Pets attending are weighed and their owners are offered advice about exercise and diet. After the consultation the pets are weighed and photographed each month so their progress can be monitored.”
To enter a pet call White Cross Vets on (01943) 873147 and book to attend a free weight-loss clinic. The deadline for entries is the end of this month.
