Ilkley MP celebrates world cup coming to UK
12:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Local news
Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins joined fellow Parliamentarians and rugby league legends at a House of Commons reception to celebrate the upcoming 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
The 26-game tournament kicks off on October 26 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, with the winners being crowned at Old Trafford in the World Cup Final on November 30.
Mr Hopkins said: “As a huge sports fan still prone to pulling on a pair of rugby boots, I am thrilled that another major international sporting tournament will shortly get under way in this country, with a number of high profile games being played in Yorkshire.
“I shall obviously be backing England and was pleased to hear from Head Coach Steve McNamara that he believes we have an excellent chance of lifting the magnificent trophy at the end of November.
“I hope rugby league fans across Keighley and Ilkley will embrace the tournament and help cheer our boys to victory.”
Also in attendance in Westminster was ex-Wigan and Great Britain rugby league legend Martin “Chariots” Offiah.
