Otley is now an official member of Mayors for Peace.
The town’s council voted in July to affiliate itself to the international organisation, which campaigns for the abolition of all nuclear weapons.
Otley’s membership, along with 24 other towns and cities from across the world, has just been confirmed – taking the total membership for Mayors for Peace to 5,736, from 157 countries.
Council leader Councillor John Eveleigh (Lab, Ashfield) said: “It is brilliant for Otley to belong to this global movement for peace.
“The fact that nearly 6,000 cities and towns across the world are committed to work together for peace and disarmament, and that we are a part of it, should be celebrated.”
Mayors for Peace was set up by the mayors of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, both of which suffered devastating atomic bomb attacks by the United States near the end of the Second World War.
