Celebrity scarecrows and giant sunflowers set for Burley summer festival
12:00pm Saturday 13th April 2013 in Local news
Film star scarecrows, giant sunflowers and a Dickens of a theatre performance will be among the highlights of this year’s Burley-in-Wharfedale summer festival, which gets under way on August 16.
Over the last five years the family-friendly gathering has attracted increasing numbers of visitors with its mix of music for all ages and tastes, competitions and must-see events.
Residents will be testing their gardening skills as they attempt to grow the tallest sunflower and imaginations will run riot as they look to produce the best scarecrow based on a cinema theme.
The week-long festival gets under way with a Friday evening Ceilidh before the opening weekend pulls in the crowds with a series of popular events.
Pet owners will get the chance to put their best paws forward at the 2nd Burley Dog Show while thousands of visitors are expected to cast their eyes over a wide range of classic vehicles at Burley Cricket Club on Sunday, August 18.
The full programme of events is still being worked on by the organisers, but the first weekend is expected to feature music in the park as well as a food and drink market featuring British and international cuisine and products such as new flavour cupcakes, hand-crafted pies and specialist cheeses. Highly-regarded theatre group Paperzoo will return to the festival to stage a production of the Charles Dickens classic Hard Times and the village’s own theatre group will be teasing their audience with a mystery “whodunnit”. Music lovers are also well-catered for with a range of performances including brass bands, the Wharfedale Chamber Ensemble and opera.
The festival marketing unit has already snapped up sponsorship for some of the key events, but local businesses still have plenty of time to support the festival.
