Ilkley Grammar School pupils put weight behind tasks
7:00pm Friday 15th March 2013 in Local news
Ilkley Grammar School students have taken part in the Dales Rotary Youth Technology Tournament.
The students were asked to design and make a vehicle powered only by a weight and the vehicle needed to climb an incline.
There were many specifications it had to meet and the folio of designs was worth as many marks as the product.
Creative young thinkers from seven secondary schools representing Ilkley, Otley, Skipton, South Craven and Settle descended on Gargrave Village Hall to find a solution to the tricky engineering problem.
Teams of four were supplied with a basic pack of everyday materials.
South Craven School took top honours in two of the tournament categories, winning the key stage three and key stage four trophies. The key stage five prize went to Giggleswick School, with the Ilkley Grammar School team, pictured left, in second place.
Tournament director David Mitton, from Skipton Craven Rotary Club, was delighted with the level of interest shown by local schools and colleges.
He said: “It’s been really encouraging to see the continued popularity of this event. We are very grateful to our sponsor (Advanced Actuators Ltd of Silsden), to the teachers who so enthusiastically support this day and to the participating students who always come up with remarkably ingenious solutions.”
