Role of high streets praised by Otley MP during House debate

The important role high streets play in communities such as Otley and Yeadon has been highlighted.

MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) raised the issue last week during a debate on how planning rules could be used to preserve urban views and regenerate town centres.

Mr Mulholland welcomed the work the Government had done to support high streets, but warned against deregulation of the planning system.

He said: “It is to be welcomed that the Government have recognised the important role of high streets as important hubs of social interaction and cohesion, and have made a number of moves to support them in the face of the growth of large, out- of-town shopping centres and internet shopping.

“High streets such as those in Headingley, Meanwood, Otley and Yeadon are so important to the local community and offer a fantastic range of local produce simply not available in large, commercial shops. It is so important that the planning system in place protects high streets and town centres, and that the Government closes the loopholes in the system that allow shops and pubs to be changed without the local community having the chance to have a say.”
