Student keen to learn history of Otley prisoner camp
1:00pm Saturday 2nd March 2013 in Local news
A local student is seeking help from anyone who remembers Otley's old prisoner of war camp.
Alasdair Love is trying to find out more about the Weston Lane Camp which housed German prisoners at the end of World War II.
The research, which is also looking at the impact the camp had on the town and its residents, will form part of his A-level History project.
He said: “Most physical evidence of the camp has long since vanished but I'm trying to find out more about it and whether it has left any lasting legacy on Otley.
“This might be a physical legacy, such as structures built by the PoWs, a business legacy, such as local businesses started by former PoWs, or a community legacy – such as PoWs settling in Otley or keeping in touch with locals.”
Anyone with information can send an e-mail to Alasdair, who also recently carried out a street survey in Otley about the camp, at otleypowcamps@gmail.com or call 07586 361449.
