A charity which supports cancer patients and their families is calling on the community to dust off their tea pots ahead of The Big Brew.

Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale’s annual fundraising event will be officially launched by Lady Mayoress, Margaret Smith, from Ilkley, during a civic event on February 22.

This year’s event marks a special stage for the local charity, as it falls in its Silver Jubilee year and to mark this achievement they aim to collect a total of £12,500.

Each year, the charity provides holistic support which helps to make a positive difference to the lives of over 3,500 local people affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Mrs Smith, of Menston, said: “I am delighted to be hosting the launch of the Big Brew. The charity has supported patients and their families for the last 25 years and wants to make sure they are around for the next 25 years for everyone who needs them.

“I look forward to meeting people who pop in to City Hall for a cuppa.”

The Big Brew campaign will run throughout the month of March and anyone can support the fundraising effort by either organising a coffee morning or an afternoon tea event or by simply attending one.

Last year, the community raised £7,500 from Big Brew events which went directly to support local people affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The campaign is aiming to become as well known as the Macmillan Coffee Morning and Marie Curie Blooming Tea Party.

Linda Enderby, community fundraiser, said: “We could not have wished for a better way to launch our Big Brew Month and cannot thank the Lady Mayoress enough for her generous support of our Silver Jubilee Campaign.

“We are inviting the whole community to get involved too, by hosting a Big Brew cake sale, coffee morning or afternoon tea event.”

The civic event will be held in the Banqueting Suite at City Hall, Bradford, from 10.30am to 2.30pm. The public are welcome to shop and browse a variety of stalls or simply enjoy a cup of tea.
