Students from Pool-in-Wharfedale and Menston are celebrating being offered Oxbridge university places.

Leonora Cherry, from Pool, has a conditional offer to study Human, Social and Political Science at Magdalene, Cambridge, while Beth Tapsfield, from Menston, will read Biomedical Science at Keble College, Oxford.

The girls are two of 12 Grammar School at Leeds students to have been offered Oxbridge places.

Student James Roberts - who will study English at Cambridge and is one of the school's head boys - said: "I don’t think anyone really expects it, so opening the letter and seeing acceptance was an incredible feeling, knowing that a near-lifelong dream has been realised.

"I feel honoured to have been accepted by such a prestigious institution, and the elation still hasn’t quite worn off."

Head of student development at the school, Christine Jagger, said: "We are delighted for the students. They have worked hard throughout their school career and are a real credit to themselves.

"The selection process is very demanding, so we are very proud of their success.”
