Hop to it! WharfeBank Brewery secures deal with Harewood House

A Wharfedale brewery is celebrating winning a long-term deal to brew beer made from hops harvested in the grounds of Harewood House.
WharfeBank Brewery, based at Pool-in-Wharfedale Business Park, says the stately home's ales – which it will also bottle, sell and distribute – will complement its core product range well.
The award-winning brewery, which stands on the banks of the River Wharfe only a few miles from Harewood, will create three different beers under the contract – Harewood Gold, Harewood Red Kite, and Harewood Dark, a stout.
As well as producing bottled versions WharfeBank has agreed to make the ales available in both cask and keg, so pubs can sell a “Harewood pint”.
The brewery's partner and managing director, Martin Kellaway, said: “We are delighted to have secured the Harewood contract. We have been involved with the team at Harewood for two years, brewing for the shop and providing our ales at events.
“This partnership will allow us to negotiate listings and distribution across Yorkshire, as well as national and international accounts, enabling beer lovers everywhere to enjoy a taste of Harewood. The hops from Harewood are excellent bittering varieties, a testament to head gardener Trevor Nicholson and his team.
“Brewing with these, and other quality ingredients that are produced locally, makes for a great product and we hope to introduce additional brews in time.”
Chief executive officer of Harewood House, Mike Schafer, CEO of Harewood House, said: “As one of the finest houses in England there is a genuine interest in all things Harewood.
“This unique venture allows us to take our heritage varieties of Harewood hops grown in our working kitchen garden, and create a traditional product while reaching a new and diverse audience.
"We are excited to work with WharfeBank Brewery.
“They have produced a fitting range of beers capturing the spirit of Harewood.”
WharfeBank, which is currently expanding its operation into multiple retailers, bottling and export markets, also runs three pubs – Pool’s Half Moon Inn, the Fleece, in Otley, and The Rook and Gaskill Inn in York, under a deal with Castle Rock Brewery.
